Best bet would be to go with mk4 or Mk5 TDI’s (I’m slightly biased) It'd help if you specified 05/06 or 09/10 MK5 due to the different engines. I have a 2009 Jetta and 2011 Audi Q7 and the common rail engines have proven to be pretty great. I have 4. Two 2012 tdi Jetta wagons. A 2012 tdi Passat and an 09 tdi wagon.
The T-reg is much more comfortable. Power is better. Pittsburgh is not quite, but almost as bad as Boston for winter weather so the 4wd will be a nice asset. Mileage drops by around 1/3 from jetta to touareg, but with the diesel, it's still much better than comparable gas vehicles. I looked at other diesel suv's & Touareg was the only choice
Audi A4 B7 - audi 1.9 TDI or 2.0 TDI - Avant. The 1.9 engine you have in the Golf is a good one. High-mileage diesels can be liable to major failure, but this applies more to the newer engines with their various appendages which go disastrously wrong. The 1.9TDI is a relatively old design and has less to go wrong, and therefore a good reputation.
You can do better than that with good diesel fuel with aromatic content around 20 to 25% that you drive with at constant steady state. This same fuel will load up your diesel particulate filter to no end in city driving. The 3rd generation TDI Touareg with the 8 speed transmission is a model of efficiency, if driven properly for MPG.
We Tune More Than 572 Volkswagen Variants. Volkswagen is regarded as one of the leading manufacturers of TDI engines. Their first Volkswagen Group TDI engine was an inline five cylinder engine introduced in the 1989 with the Audi 100. Since then, their name and vehicles have become synonymous with the phrase TDI (Turbo Diesel Injection) and
a T3 off a 2.5 CHRY gasser (much larger T3 than the stock diesel unit) a T3 off a 2.3 Pug TD a TD04 off a 2.2 CHRY a K24 off a VW 2.0TD a K26 off an Audi quattro
If you plan on making your next car purchase in 2010 or 2015 then I would definitely recommend the TDI. Properly serviced, it will last much longer than a 1.8T. And when late-in-life problems do pop up, the TDI engine is simpler than the 1.8T, especially in the top end (2 valves/cyl for the TDI vs 5 valves/cyl for the 1.8T).
